LET’S TALK ABOUT DIGITAL DEMOCRACY, a discussion series by LWV of Maine

September Topic: "Rewiring Democracy”

Our guests are Bruce Schneier and Nathan E. Sanders, authors of the recent book, Rewiring Democracy, presenting an informative and wide-ranging exploration of how AI will alter every facet of democracy, and how to harness the technology to distribute rather than concentrate power. We've invited them bring us up to date on new developments since their book came out and to talk to us aboutinitiatives the League could pursue to achieve the goal of a stronger, more participatory democracy.

Democracy is facing new challenges worldwide, and AI will be a part of that. It can inform, empower, and engage citizens. It can also disinform, disempower, and disengage them. The choice is up to us. Schneier and Sanders blaze the path forward, showing us how we can use it to make an AI-infused democracy stronger and more participatory.

FSSA has been promoting a series of public town halls around the state regarding their implementation of Medicaid/HIP work requirements. This is important because there are several missing pieces of information that FSSA has yet to explain to HIP/Medicaid recipients, providers, or the public. With implementation scheduled to begin in just a few weeks,these public meetings may be our last opportunity to urge FSSA to provide some guidancein order to prevent coverage loss for thousands of vulnerable Hoosiers.

Later, you will be able to choose whether you wish to help place yard signs at polling places, serve as a voter advocate offering information and assistance to voters outside polling places, or even serve as a coordinator. Signing upnowwill help with statewide planning.

IS INDY NEWS BIASED?

Nine recommendations for a healthy news diet, by Tracey Compton, Indianapolis Public Editor for the Indiana Capital Chronicle.If you adopt a handful of these suggestions, you’ll save yourself time, energy and frustration. Ultimately, you will become a savvy news consumer.

1. Make deliberate choices about what form of news you consume.
2. Go to the original news outlet that first reported a story—all the rest is just a rehash.
3. Install news apps from the outlets you trust and go to them for local, national and international news consistently.
4. Go local and consume less national news.
5. Judge the experience of the reporter on the beat, not the outlet overall.
6. Do your research on the news outlets you frequent, checking Wikipedia for basic information.
7. Get news from a variety of sources.
8. Seek out news outlets and sources that have representation across the political spectrum as their value proposition.
9. When you are frustrated, give news outlets feedback.

2026 NATIONAL VOTER REGISTRATION DAY

Updates from some Local Leagues

Fort Wayne

LWVFW is partnering with Fort Wayne Community Schools and Alive Fort Wayne to provide voter registration and participation assistance alongside Peace Family lunch days at each of the seven high schools throughout September. By embedding with a known community partner, we will benefit from connections already made and introductions to students eligible to vote. This will supplement & reinforce our presentations to government classes throughout the year. A visit to Northside High School classes in March resulted in over 100 new voter registrations in one day!

Cass County

The Cass County League will be holding their NVRD event at the Black Dog Legacy Coffee Shop in Logansport on the 15th from 8-Noon.

Howard County

The LWV of Howard County Area has been invited to register voters at Indiana University Kokomo. We have set up a table at the entrance to their library in past years and are happy to be there on September 15th - sharing information and registering voters.

Southwestern League (Vanderburgh, Warrick and Posey Counties)

LWVSWIN’s Voter Registration team will be registering voters from 11 am - 2 pm at the University of Evansville Ridgeway Center. They have 5 other voter registration events planned in September.
